I am not adding a sighting but-- I just returned from a trip to China, Shanghai and environs, I looked for birds of different types and colours, but I literally saw NONE, with the exception of a white heron, and a flock of pigeons in the city. Then in the the mountain and Xian I was able to see2 singing large ones, I don't know what they are but I am looking it up for ID. I wonder if it is due to pesticides---though I don't know if and what they use. I did see as we were traveling through the countryside, pepole walking with spraying apparatus, does anyone kow if and what is being sprayed there? Would there be a silent Spring?

We took down our bird feeders today which hurt a bit. For the last three mornings at 10:00A.M. sharp, a ~40lb. Black Bear cub has been enjoying brunch at our feeders. This morning we couldn't believe that one of feeders supported all of his weight, when we saw him purched up on top of it. What an adorable being! I fear that he may have lost his mother during this hunting season and hope that he makes it through the winter. With the kind of weather that we are experiencing he will be going into dormancy in the next several weeks and we will be able to feed my feathered friends again.

October 15, 2003. Approximately 16 Buffleheads (only one with winter plumage, or could it have been the lone male in the group?) paddling about. One seal. A Great Blue Heron landed on a tree limb just 5-6 feet directly over my head, and stayed there for some time. An amazing sight --- almost close enough to touch.

First 3 Red-necked Grebe over the weekend (Oct. 12), now heard calling frequently. about eight Yellow-legs in Burnt Cove Sunday. Several Sharpies over our hill Tuesday afternoon. A No. Goshawk is active around Lily Pd. in Deer Isle. Family of Coyotes of concern to residents in No. Deer Isle -- this is the time of year when they vocalize at night! We found coyotes good neighbors in upstate NY, but we did not have outdoor cats.

About 4:30 pm on Friday afternoon, 17 Wild turkeys emerged in a line along the shoreline in front our house, stopping here and there to peck away under the apple trees. They proceeded along the bank, still in a line, backlit by the late afternoon sun, then disappeared down the bank. Soon they were visible walking out across the mudflat headed for the far side. Must have decided walking in mud was too much effort for they all arose into the air and flew the rest of the way to other shore. Quite a sight!

A mother Bobcat and 3 kittens, the size of snowshoe hares, were crossing Morgan Bay Rd. in East Blue Hill 4:30 this afternoon. I was really concerned for their safety as this road is notorious for high speed driving. I took a short cut in the opposite direction through the woods back to our home. I was then surprised to see another adult bobcat 25 ft. in front of me. After a moment of staring at each other, the bobcat scurried ahead along the trail.. I also scurried home to make sure my geese, turkeys, and chickens were all in their pens..I was beside myself to see 5 bobcats in one afternoon!!!!
