Today we saw an osprey on our land in Blue Hill at the nest they built last year. Two young were fledged there last year and we are hoping for a repeat performance. Yesterday we saw a double-crested cormorant in the bay, and the first phoebe and hermit thrush showed up near our house. A pair of wood frogs were noisily mating in the small "waterfall" pond in our driveway circle yesterday as well. Long-tailed ducks were still here as of yesterday, as was the male Northern Pintail who has been here all winter.

The first osprey appeared today perched in a tall tree overlooking Winslow Stream here in South Penobscot. Soon there will be 8-10 all here fishing throughout the day. Food for osprey, the anadromous (lives in salt water but spawns in fresh )species are beginning to arrive. The Rainbow smelts have been running for over a week here; fisherman are out in the middle of the night at high tide with their nets and buckets. Seals have been sighted too, following the fish close to the mouth of the stream. The next wave, the alewives, must be on the way, and Great Blue Herons as well though haven't seen them right here yet.

Kathy Keene reports what sound like wood frogs for past two weeks and Spring Peepers Tuesday at a wooded pool in Mountainville. Saturday night might be good for spotted salamanders migrating to vernal pools. Please let me know of any sightings.

Hermit Thrush way back in the woods along the Grindleville Road (April 7). Osprey on April 10 in Bucksport. I know it's off peninsula but a Golden Eagle soared over my parents' house in Milford on April 10. A colleague at school who heard about this reports a relative in Orland seeing a Golden Eagle around there recently as well.

Eastern Pheobe (1st that I have seen this year) ___________ Look for Wilson's Snipe(Common Snipe)in fallow flooded fields or marshes, Blue-winged Teal in fresh water marshes with good cat-tail stands, Tree Swallows swooping over brackish or fresh water, and Eastern Bluebirds in open space areas. Make a posting for I know they are here and someone has seen one.
