Did anyone else have swarms of Ladybugs on their houses today? Around 2pm all sides of our house were covered with them! We're talking hundreds or more- it was quite a show! A guide book said that large numbers occasionally find their way into houses in autumn looking for places to spend the winter.

I called in a Barred Owl last night --- first time I've ever managed it. I didn't see it, but it came to maybe 100 feet of the house and we called and responded. I heard a second way off in the distance.

Has anyone been through Surry the last few evenings and seen the flock of Nighthawks flying over the stream as you come into town from Blue Hill? Over 100 were there Friday and Sat. at about 6:30pm. I think they were after a swarm of fairly large insects- maybe flying ants? I assume they are migrating and it was a surprise to see so many. I was out on the boat off Hardwood Island at the Salmon pens and there is a large flock of Laughing Gulls of all ages hanging around. They have learned to fly after and catch some of the fish food as it is ejected from the feeding pipes. Good weekend entertainment!

Finally a few shorebirds at the Salt Pond. Although I was away earlier this week so don't know exactly when they showed up, yesterday there were a few Black-bellied Plovers calling and a small flock of peeps. Today a Greater Yellowlegs. All seem to be about a month later than usual.

We have had a pair of Tufted Titmice in the yard all week- it's nice to have them back! On the way back from climbing Blue Hill this morning, I came upon a Barred Owl right beside the trail. I watched him for quite some time while Blaise ran back for the camera. He was very cooperative while I waited and sat and stretched and flew over my head to another tree so I had even a better view. He stayed put while I took half a roll of film and hopefully I got a good photo or two. It was really cool to see him in the wild just doing his thing and not being threatened by us at all.

First shorebird this season. A Lesser Yellowlegs at the Benjamin River. The shorebird migration south seems later than usual this year. None yet on the Salt Pond.
