1) KenW raises an interesting question about the dearth of raccoons. We have observed the same thing locally. Could they have caught mange from the fox population a year or two ago? Could they be prey to coyotes? There certainly is an opportunity for predators with the number of small snowshoe hare and red squirrel. Young raccoons and skunks showing up as roadkills. 2) Marnie has found 2-3 red-bellied snakes DOR on her morning walks -- too bad. 3) Recently we saw a two Leach's Petrel just off Barred Island and about 15 in one group half way to North Haven (Aug. 3). There was also half a dozen Com Tern catching small fish. No Bonaparte's Gulls. We don't remember seeing petrels in the bay before last year. Are their numbers increasing? Are they nesting closer in? 4) Mike Warr saw a forked-tailed bird the size of a Merlin making high-pitched cries in his yard in Stonington yesterday. He sugggests Swallow-tailed Kite, but didn't see any markings.

Three years ago we saw raccoons daily. Since then fewer and this summer none at all. Any thoughts?

The raptors are starting to disperse and move south again. I have been seeing American Kestrels daily for the last 6 days. Yesterday an immature Sharp-shinned Hawk and 3 days ago an adult Broad-winged Hawk.

In response to the previous sighting on the Box Turtle with a broken shell, the shell of a turtle will heal if no severe damage is done to internal organs. With the quick exit that the turtle made after it was uprighted it sounds very encouraging that a full recovery will be made. I think that it was better to immediately release the turtle as Liffey did.

Forgot to mention: a Box Turtle crossing 176 a few yards from the Mines Road turnoff must have been hit by a car. It was on its back. I turned around and went back, picked it up and took it to the edge of the woods. Its shell was broken near its back legs, but it seemed eager to get going and made a purposeful turtle's dash into the woods. Do shells heal? Would it have been better for me to give the guy a temporary home for a few weeks, or was it right to let him go there?

1. Mature Bald Eagle dined on horseshoe crab on the rock beyond my kitchen window. Very interesting article on horsehoe crabs in this month's Yankee Magazine. Maybe everyone else knew about the usefulness of HC blood in testing vaccines and other injectible drugs, but I had not known about it. 2. Heard a male Scarlet Tanager last week while gardening. Tracked it down and watched it for a while. Didn't see a female. Hadn't heard/seen it on our property before except, perhaps, briefly earlier in the spring. 3. Woke up at 4 a.m. this morning hearing an unfamiliar bird song in the woods. Went out to look for it, but, of course, it stopped just as I stepped outside. Bats were still up and about, zooming around catching mosquitoes (I hope). The bird I heard sounded a bit like a Towhee's song except upside-down ("tea-your-drink"). And I'm puzzled because here it is July 21 and I've never heard it before. 4. Many Cedar Waxwings on berry trees here most days. At the feeders, many Purple Finch (significantly more than last summer); Pine Siskin; Goldfinch; a few BC Chickadees; WB Nuthatch (but no Red-Breasted!). Regrettably, my year here is drawing to a close. I'll be up for Xmas. Hope to participate in the CBC.

Sad to report a Red-bellied Snake DOR in lower Sunset July 13. Scads of Spear-marked Black moths this month -- they are diurnal. Tiger Swallowtail butterflies still around. Ringlets and Skippers appears earlier in the month. This past week Marnie spotted Frittilary spp., Crescent spp., and Pink-edged Sulfur. Jan Baumgartner reports a pair of osprey compulsively building a large nest on the reach. Is this a young pair practicing, or a pair renesting after being displaced by eagles or whatever? In any event, it's a bit late!

In East Blue Hill on a walk along the Morgan Bay Road, my husband and I saw five grouse chicks attempting to cross the road on foot. A moment later 3 flew up onto a nearby tree limb. Their faces still full of their chick fuzz, yet their wing feathers were developed enough to fly. A few moments later 1/2 mile down the road from seeing the chicks, we saw a full grown Bobcat crossing the road headed in the direction of our home. We walked a little faster to make sure the chickens were in...8:00p.m.

Blue Hill Mountain is still loaded with birds... I went up on Sat. morning 7/6 and took the newly cut 4 wheeler trail down from the top to the town field and what a nice change! I finally got my first Black Throated Blue Warbler which was a treat. There were Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, Hermit and Wood Thrush, lots of Blackburnian Warblers and much more. Go check it out!
