Started watching hawks at 10:30AM & ended at 12:00PM. Wind out of the West-Northwest at ~10 mph. The migrating birds were 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 RED-TAILED HAWK (immature), 1 TURKEY VULTURE. The local raptors noted not in migration but just soaring in the favorable weather conditions were 3 BALD EAGLE (1 - 2yr. old, 1 - 4 yr. old, and 1 adult)
_________
While working out in the yard later in the day noticed another AMERICAN KESTREL on the telephone wires and 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS (1 adult male & 1 imm.)working the blueberry barrens.
___________
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW (imm.), & all the usual sparrow species that one would expect to see at this season. 25 DARKED JUNCO at the feeders.
___________
While traveling the nearby roads on the peninsula have noticed a very impressive, large number of juncos on their migration in the last 3 days.

10/12 - I forgot the better sighting yesterday. A male and female American Kestrel flying and perching together. Great soaring action something one would expect in the springtime as courting action.

OSPREY In spite of the wet weather I have seen several migrating individuals in the last 2 days. The North winds make for some what easier travel southward and this is one of the few hawk species that don't mind getting a bit wet.

3 VESPER SPARROW (Here on the blueberry barriens this is "no big deal" because they're here every day from 1st of May until 1st of November)
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW this individual has been hanging out in the various fairly large brush piles around the house for the third day now. This bird of the genus, Zonotrichia, is a bit funky in that the white median crown-stripe is present only in the anterior part of the stripe. I assume that this is an adult in winter plumage because of the black lateral crown-stripes but have not seen any pictures in texts that even come close. Whatever the case, it makes for easy identification of this individual. I suppose that he/she won't leave until this weather patern that we seem to be stuck in finally changes, which looks like may well be until Tues. or so..... With the brush piles for shelter and generous supply of white millet being handed out, why should he/she push on. She/he will just hang out and put fat on until a night when conditions for sparrow migration improve. Meanwhile, I'll continue gawking at this funky bird!
8 October 2005 - Around the house on Pertville Rd., Segwick
