For the Great Backyard Birdcount I went out in our backyard and taped for Owls this evening and got a response from a Northern Saw Whet. Its funny, because you're supposed to start with the small owls and then go to the larger ones, so you don't scare the small ones off. Well this Saw Whet waited until I'd played the Barred Owl calls before s/he went off. He gave me a good 30 seconds worth of calling. S/he was calling from the same approximate location as one I got on the Christmas Bird Count.

In the Great Backyard Bird count (that goes from today to Monday-- see www.birdsource.org/gbbc/) you can count other areas besides your yard-- and since it was really windy today and nothing much around our yard, we decided to go look at Blue Hill Bay and other shoreline areas on the Blue Hill Peninsula. At Naskeag Point (Brooklin) I managed to use the scope inside the car since is was very windy. One of my lists didn't qualify because we counted for less than 15 minutes and I'd forgotten about that rule-- there were no different species on that one. It seemed like the eiders were hunkering down out of the wind (looked for but didn't see any Kings). We didn't see too many Longtails so I guess they were out in the surf somewhere enjoying the wind and rough water. Here are the lists I submitted (below). It takes about 30 minutes for the data to appear on the web site, and it is fun to see your data appear, especially if you can find a species that there aren't too many of. So far there is only one creeper listed for the state-- I've got to find ours tomorrow.
