Peninsula birders had a very successful Great Backyard Bird Count, reporting sightings from February 15-18. 50 species were found in Blue Hill, including hard to find boreal species such as Gray Jay and Black-backed Woodpecker and both the Red and White-winged Crossbills. Blue Hill had the only Orange-crowned Warbler found in the state.

Today a pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were constructing a nest in Brooklin. This is a very typical nesting time for this species when there is an abundant cone crop. I watched the pair of crossbills building the nest (95% of the nest building seemed to be the female's effort)for about 3 hours. It was fascinating to watch them collecting lichens, moss and wood fibers from an old stump that was mostly decayed and other plant materials. When the female starts to incubate the eggs, the male feeds the female a regurgitated cone seed milk like substance from his crop because of the absolute necessity of keeping the eggs at the proper temperature.
