The nest of White-winged Crossbills that I have been watching since February 17th, when I observed the female of the mated pair building a nest, sucessfully fledged 2 or 3 offspring on 3-27-2007. The family has since been seen cruising through the nearby nesting area. The adults will be supplimenting the fledglings diet for about another 25-30 days, when they will be totally on their own.

Two fox sparrows were at my place this morning, bossing the juncos around under the feeders. FYI: chukars. One person I mentioned them to saw the same group a few days previous. One other said he sees them around occasionally in the woods, but he mentioned the little quail display feather, which it doesn't seem the chukar has. Also, a web search brought up several bird hunting stock farms in Maine that say they have chukar.

The migrants are coming! Redwing Blackbirds and Grackles landed on Tuesday and Song and Fox Sparrows were scratching around the feeders this morning. By the looks of the weather, they should have waited down south another week!

There were four chukar (That is the sound of pages in birdbooks flipping; go to the quail and bobwhite section.) in North Blue Hill today about noon. They were on the east side of Route 15 at the intersection with Hinckley Ridge Rd. and Ackley Farm Rd. Sibley's says they get brought into every state for stocking/hunting. Does anybody know of any other cases in this area? Since I had no clue what I was looking at, I didn't know what to look for, so I don't know whether they were male or female.

This area seems to be a magnet for Snow Buntings this week. Reports have come in from Ellsworth, Surry, Blue Hill and today I saw a flock of 26 in Brooksville. They were coming readily to mixed seeds spread on open ground.
