I haven't been very good about reporting stuff these days and will try harder now that spring is around the corner and things are happening every day! We had our first woodcock buzzing outside our bedroom window this morning just before daybreak. My brother had one at Douglas Pond last Thursday, March 12. David's right- the blackbirds and grackles have just returned in bigger numbers but I had my first RWBB on Sunday March 8 and were only seeing single birds until this week. We still have Bohemian Waxwings eating crabapples and also Redpolls and Siskins but I haven't seen the White-winged Crossbills in a week or so.

I've been doing my mid-March ritual for several days now: looking up at the sunny trees above Leslie's house as I park at GSA to see the first flock of spring blackbirds sunning themselves after their long night flight. Disappointed again this morning, I trudged to my classroom, only to perk up as that familiar ker-chee from the trees down by Main Street filled the morning air with the sounds of spring. Yeah!
