A Ring-necked Duck and a Green-winged Teal were both at the pond on the Grindleville Road today. And, very excitingly, a noisy Tufted Titmouse was at the end of Mattson Lane today. I urged him to come further into my house in the woods... but I haven't had much luck with garden birds here.

Mike Little also saw a N. Shrike March 13 at Scott's LAnding. This morning at 4:oo AM Long-tailed Ducks were yodeling off our shore. Yesterday two im. bald eagle (one 2cd yr?) flew over very low. We have had wintering adults, but are these arriving from the South for the summer? Two pairs of our resident eagles are nesting now. Two weeks ago, the Sat. after the storm (March 6?) I went to Barred I. to see what blew in: nothing! two red-necked grebe, a loon, and a few eider were it. Chickadees, red-br nuthatches, and woodpeckers are hitting the feeders as if gathering energy for breeding, while juncos are singing all over.

About time to catch up on some sightings: Back in mid-December, Win and Brad Pusey say a single horned lark near Naskeag. Our white-throated sparrow has been here for a month now (Jan. 30). There have been more than one sightings of goshawk on Deer Isle – one by Ann Hooke in Mountainville over New Years and one more recently Kathy Kaiser’s Jan. 125.. Jan. 10, Lee Fay witnessed the death of an imm. No. shrike in Stonington. Cause of death not clear – it was puffed up one cold, but not frigid, morning; and just fell over. I have the specimen, if anyone can suggest a good recipient such as COA. Lee has also seen red-tailed hawk several times near Burnt Cove. There has been a nest within half a mile in recent years. Both on the CBC and last week, ca. Jan. 24, I have seen com. goldeneye in Crocett Cove and Goose Cove. In prior years, they were generally not found on the western side of Deer Isle. Finally, why does the partridge cross the road? There is a spot on the Goose Cove Road (the corner by the swamp) where over the years I have several times – as recently as December – see a ruffed grouse, fly, walk, lead chicks across the road. What is there about the habitat in this locale?
