From Ann Flewelling in Sedgwick: For over a week now a male blackburnian warbler has been hanging out, hunting and pecking on our lawn under the black sunflower seed feeder. Pays no mind to jays, mourning doves, sparrows, finches, etc, all the other chicks hip-hoping about. Takes sanctuary in the nearby large spruce with all the feathered rest when disturbed.

E. Phoebe here in Sunset, April 6. Several reports of Woodcock. Great Blue Heron last week in Stonington.

8 April - Large hawk sighted from a distance, in flight and perched for a short time, in the woods between the ball field and Old Cemetery on Union Street. Two days earlier, heard what sounded like a Cooper's Hawk in the same woods. Have Cooper's been sighted here before?

Saw the first Mourning Cloak butterfly yesterday. Also, the Wood Frogs are quacking in the pond and we had a pair of Wood Ducks in the pond late yesterday afternoon. Brown-headed Cowbirds have been here for 3 days. Still no E. Phoebe, maybe it moved down to GSA this year! The White-throated Sparrows are everywhere but the Juncos have moved on. Still have Pine Siskins and found a third bird dead at my feeder yesterday. I assume it was due to Salmonella but I have cleaned all feeders and feeding area. It is sad to watch these birds get weaker and weaker and finally succumb. I called Acadia Wildlife and there doesn't seem to be any help available for the sick ones except keeping your feeding stations clean to help prevent spreading.

Most of the Common Eider appear to have left the upper Bay. Only 33 at the Falls on Sunday, the lowest count since October. Long-tailed Ducks are still in the Bay, but in reduced numbers. A single Horned Grebe at the Falls was in full breeding plumage. The Eastern Towhee hanging around Conary Cove made it through the winter.
6 April 2009 - Blue Hill Bay
